Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the main theoretical issues related the dimension of meaning.

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding

The Course aims to promote the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the main concepts of pragmatics in such a way as to be able to support one's own positions on theoretical problems and solve problems related to this field of research.

Autonomy of judgement

Awareness of the main theoretical issues relating to the dimension of meaning, the boundary between semantics and pragmatics will enable the development of autonomous judgement also in relation to the various models of analysis of the pragmatic dimension that have been developed in the 20th century.

Communication skills

Reflection on communication requires the development of a specialised lexicon that will enable to provide a technical description of the object of study to specialists and non specialists.

 Learning skills

The acquisition of learning skills will enable one to undertake subsequent research paths with a high degree of autonomy.

 

Course Structure

36 hours will be devoted to frontal lessons and to group works including seminars. Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.


Required Prerequisites

Linguistics and in particular syntax, lexicon, semantics should be mastered

Detailed Course Content

The Course aims at attaining a mastery of the field of pragmatics and at developing skills in critical thinking, in communication and in the use of research methodologies. Communication will be approached at a linguistic and cognitive level in different languages. The Course intends to focus not only on the basics of Intercultural Pragmatics and its theoretical developments, but also to provide a methodological toolbox to collect and analyse data.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

As regards the verification of learning, students will be able to present group work (max. 5 persons) that will be based on the application of the main theories of pragmatics and ethnopragmatics to authentic data and on the presentation and discussion of the results of the research work.

If required, students will be able to discuss the program in the traditional manner, i.e. with an oral questions on   the scheduled texts are discussed. 

The learning assessment may also be conducted at a distance, should the conditions require it.
