Learning Objectives

The comprehension of some fundamental topics of architecture (composition, construction, landscape, nature, matter, art, history, city, type), is the basys of the disciplinary and cultural training for architects. Therefore, these terms themselves will be investigated and deepened through the works (and the words) by some masters of 20th century (Loos, Mies, Le Corbusier, Aalto, Kahn) and contemporary (Rossi, Venturi, Siza, Venezia, Campo Baeza, Koolhaas, etc.).

Through the knoledgement of the exemplary work of the masters of 20th and the most significative contemporary interpreters of architetcure, as well as some their texts and books, we want to think about the multidisciplinary character of architecture, whose statute hardly decipherable and delimitable, is always poised between theory and technic, between though abstactction, practice reality and unpredictability of feeling. Thus, through the understanding of the masters experience that whistle become sometimes a masterly balance and a necessary reference in the teoric and techinc training in every architects.



Detailed Course Content

The knowledge of the works by 20th century masters and by some fundamentals contemporary authors, decripted even through the word as a witness of their thinking, will be the base of the classroom activities. Topics of this course will be deeply address in lessons and exercises, as well as in the treatment of essential bibliographic reference. The final discussion with the students will be addressed upon the verify of that reference, of the themes treated in the lessons and on the explenation of the exercises. Finally, it will be asked to the students to work on a sketchbook diary in which they could gather and collect reflections and notes, drawings and words, concerning the themes threated in the lessons. The terms on wich the students shall elaborate ther sketchbook will be choosen frome one of the following words: LIGHT, SPACE, TIME, PLACE, ARCHETYPE, CITY, STYLE, LANGUAGE. The sketchbook contents and the themes theathed in the cousre of the lessons will constitute the corpus in the discussion of the final examination.
