Learning Objectives

The course provides an overview of the most important musical genres, from the late sixteenth century to the early twentieth century, with reference to the historical context of their production and use.

a number of paradigmatic musical works are reviewed and their formal and stylistic aspects are highlighted through a critical listening. Musical genres, styles and techniques are considered along with the relationship between musical knowledge and philosophical or literary culture, in a socio-historical context.
