GREEK HISTORY

Main aim of the lectures is to provide a basic understanding of Greek history, including the period of the great civilizations of the Bronze Age until the Roman occupation of Greece.

The lectures will cover the main themes of the ancient Greek world, with particular regard to the society in archaic and classical period, religious practices, political systems and the relationship between the West and near eastern civilizations. The lectures also will cover themes related to the birth of tyranny in Greece, in the western colonies and relations between the aristocracy and the Panhellenic sanctuaries. Special focus will also be given to economic and social history of the Hellenistic world and to the history of greek Sicily through the archaeological record.
