Learning Objectives

The study of ancient Near Eastern societies aims at developing a better knowledge of how to interpret ancient material culture for the students interested in following an academic path in the field of archaeology. Moreover, the subjects investigated during the course will be useful for a collaborating with national and international companies devoted to excavate, manage, and promote the cultural heritage in Middle Eastern countries (e.g., UNESCO; World Bank, European Community, ICCROM, ICOM, Getty Foundation, World Monument Fund, etc.).

Detailed Course Content

The course on Anatolian Archaeology will be dedicated to the study of the prehistoric societies of ancient Turkey, from complex hunter-gatherers to the first urban societies (c.20,000-2000 BC). It will use different forms of archaeological evidence (from material culture to environmental remains) to address a range of themes including technologies, their origins, dispersal and adoption (from farming to metallurgy); continuity and change in ritual practice; exchange, connectivity and the formation of cultures or 'communities of practice', social evolution from egalitarianism to inequality and urbanism. The course includes an introduction to the geography and ecology of Turkey and will also reflect upon the modern investigation of its prehistoric past.
