To acquire the ability to recognize the complexity of each historiographical building.

Detailed Course Content

The term revolution is, unlike many others, a pivotal concept of historiography and modern political thought. Since the Renaissance, this concept and its manifestations (riots, rebellions, jacqueries) were thoroughly studied by historians who examined its mains traits. Said so, this class aims to examine revolutions and rebellions in early modern history under the most recent historiographical developments and categories deriving from social sciences and modern politics. Final goal is to show how the abrupt breaking of the institutional order, mass movement and the ideological program of societal reconstruction have been and still are crucial topics to discuss.

The learning objectives of this class will be acquired through a didactic path divided in two modules:

A. The first, related to the concept of revolution and its role in the process of construction of universal civilization, will look at the crisis and closures of the XVII and XVIII centuries.

B. The second will focus on some crucial aspects of rebellions and revolutions looking at the role played by propaganda in the construction of consent.
