Learning Objectives

The course aims to investigate the genesis and development of the Christian image between the classic iconographic schemes and other content related to the spread of the new faith from III to VIII century A.D.

The analysis of figurative themes most popular of late antique and early medieval Christian art will be addressed in a constant relationship with the contemporary theological literature and with the transformations of the society of the time. There will be seminars, guided tours in the catacombs of Syracuse and in the main buildings of Christian and Medieval Catania. In addition, a workshops will be held, regarding the corpus of Christian symbols in the epigraphical documentation.



Detailed Course Content

Fundamentals of Christian and medieval iconography, history studies, figurative themes, pictorial cycles, art of Christian Catacombs, churches and other religious buildings, sarcophagi and sculptures, mosaics and frescoes, minor arts.
