Learning Objectives
The course of “General Linguistics with Lab” aims to provide the students with:
1) the elements and methods of analysis necessary to grasp the basic principles of the complex functioning and change of their own language, both oral and written, i.e. in a perspective synchronic, diachronic and typological analysis;
2) the skills necessary to consciously use the tools of Italian lexicography, learning to recognize the phonic-graphic, morphological, semantic and syntactic properties of the different lexemes;
3) insights into the mechanisms of formation of multiword lexemes and idiomatic expressions.
Through lab work activities (hence the term “General Linguistics with Lab”), the student will be able to:
- acquire the necessary phonetic transcription skills (e.g., for the consultation of any dictionary, Italian and foreign, and in order to utter the sounds of language distinguishing standard pronunciations from regional and local ones);
- understand and represent, according to given theoretical models, the morphological structure of Italian words;
- understand the lexical nature of idiomatic expressions;
- understand Italian syntactic and textual structures;
- properly use up-to-date Italian dictionaries
The program also takes into account the ministry guidelines for teaching in the state secondary school; since the National Curriculum attributes a significant number of credits to this course, students are strongly recommended to take it.
Course Structure
