Learning Objectives

Knowledge of the historical development of the relationship between literature and cinema, from the beginning until today. Deepening of the problems determined by the different nature of the two media; semiotic and aesthetic mechanisms that are the basis of every literary adaptation. In terms of critical evaluation, it will be confronted the problem of judgment on the outcome of the film adaptations of literary works.


Course Structure

Frontal lessons; viewing and commenting on sequences from the history of cinema and television; writing exercises.



Detailed Course Content

The course will examine aspects of literary and cinematographic narration, with reference to the theory and practice of screen writing. A historical-critical analysis of literary works and films taken from them will be conducted. Useful elements will be provided to define the peculiarities of film criticism.

The course will be divided into the following three modules:

  1. The audiovisual novel: narration in literature and cinema ;
  2. The visible speack: screenplay and intersections between literature and cinema;
  3. Film criticism: review and academic essay.
