Course Structure

Overall analysis of the Latin literature, with an examination of a specific literary genre, through the reading, translation, and philological-stylistic commentary of selected prosaic and poetical texts of Archaic and Classical periods, with prosodic and metric analysis of the poetic language.

Detailed Course Content

Origins, morphology and evolution of Latin elegy as a literary genre.

A) Basics (5 CFU)

Knowledge of the basics of the History of Latin Literature, with special regard to the literary movements, literary genres, and main authors.

B) Detailed Studies (3 CFU)

Convention and innovation in Roman elegiac poetry.


It is required the prosodic reading of the poetic texts listed in the programme. The following reference is recommended:

- S. Boldrini, La prosodia e la metrica dei Romani, Torino 1992 (or Roma 2017), pp. 17-88 e 109-116
