Learning Objectives

knowledge and understanding: Provide interpretations of the cultural evolution and the history of Islam as a religion, social institutions and values in Islamic countries.

applying knowledge and understanding: Studying and analyzing the history of Islam and the cultural aspects that characterize the Arab peoples, the student acquires knowledge of this civilization, which facilitates his relationship with others and facilitates the fieldwork of those who engage in the activity of cultural mediation.

making a judgement: The ability to analyze text during the research and preparation of presentations during the course are a stimulus that strengthens the autonomy of the student's judgment.

communication skills: Through active participation during the lectures, seminars, and presentations, students will acquire confidence, that strengthens its ability to communicate.

learning skills: Stimulating the curiosity of the student through cultural subjects such as Islam, gives graduates the ability to interact in cultural issues

Detailed Course Content

The first part of the course is related to the period of the rise of Islam, it's spread, the divisions between Sunni and Shi‘ah, Sufi and brotherhoods, the Qur’an and the šari‘a as sources of Islamic law, the various schools of religious thought.

The second part focuses on the institutional aspects, the caliphates, the great empires, and their geopolitical impact; the third and final part deals with the colonial event, its effects in Islamic countries and the peoples' struggle to independence.

A last part will be dedicated to women in Islam and in the Islamic countries.
