Learning Objectives

The course offers to give an appropriate knowledge on history of modern and contemporary music and to set the music of 20th Century in the european history of arts and culture.



Detailed Course Content

The first part of the course will be dedicated to the reconstruction of the path of musical modernism, from Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt to Arnold Schönberg and Igor Stravinskij. The second part of the course will be dedicated to the role of music in the avant-garde cinema of the early twentieth century and to greatest masterpieces of silent cinema: Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang with music by Gottfried Huppertz, and The New Babylon (Novyy Vavilon), directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg with music by Dmitri Shostakovich.
