Learning Objectives

The English Language Course is aimed at providing students with the necessary language skills they need to meet the language requirements of their specialization and to use English correctly and fluently in the professional environment. Specifically, this course aims to develop the four skills, taking into account the morpho-syntactic and linguistic-expressive structure, with particular attention to the acquisition of vocabulary (specific terminology relating to equipment and work tools) and to communication skills (approach with the patient).



Detailed Course Content

General Content:
Talking about health and fitness (asking about health, sickness and recovery);

Distinguish Medical and General English (parts of the body, describing radiation of pain);
Describing the functions of the body (eating, five senses, other functions);
Being able to take a patient’s history (Personal Details, problems and pains, Drug history, family history, social and personal history);
Talking of Community Health (Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Social workers, Chiropodists, Opticians);
Being able to examine a patient and giving him/her instructions during a physical examination session;
Bones and treatment of fractures;
The Eye;
Mental Illness;
Being able to examine a patient and giving him/her instructions during a Mental State Examination;
Speech Therapy.

Past simple, present perfect and present perfect continuous;
future - will, be going to and present continuous;
Simple Phrasal verbs in medical context;
comparative and superlative adjectives;
countable and uncountable nouns;
prefixes and suffixes in word formation;
compound nouns and adjectives adverbs of intensity and frequency;
present perfect simple and present perfect continuous, past perfect;
modal verbs;
-ing form and infinitive;
Idiomatic expressions;
Differences between formal and informal language.
