English Language - channel 2

Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, students will achieve level B1 of the CEFR. The study of English language and syntax and the analysis of relevant scientific texts will improve the students' ability to understand linguistic structures and related contents.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

Students will achieve the proficiency necessary to use written and spoken language in specific contexts; they will improve their reading and listening skills; they will study the phonetics of the English language; they will be able to comprehend a scientific text, using appropriate register and ESP terminology.

Making Judgements

Students will develop skills and knowledge for examining scientific texts and evaluate relevant contents, they will learn how to use available tools for language learning (dictionaries, grammars, textbooks, glossaries, etc.) and they will be able to decide the best one to deal with a specific purpose.

Communicative Skills

The students' communicative skills will be implemented by individual activities and classroom talk. The CEFR describes competencies at B1 level as follows: he can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; he can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; he can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; he can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Learning Skills

The course aims to develop the students' autonomous learning skills, to increase awareness of different types of learning strategies to suit individual learning needs, and to cultivate interest and abilities for continuous self-learning.
