Learning Objectives

The course aims to consolidate students' language skills and abilities at B2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). In particular, the course aims to enhance lexical baggage and the use of the syntactic functions of the English language in relation to the specific scientific-medical field, enhance verbal comprehension and production skills and offer students a pragmatic tool for linguistic investigation and text analysis, both written and oral, based on contemporary medical language in English. To achieve these objectives, listening to messages and conversations, simulating situations in the professional sphere, reading and listening comprehension exercises on scientific texts and clinical cases will be used. The course aims to make students acquire the ability to: 1) express themselves spontaneously in English; 2) understand scientific texts written in English of medium complexity; 3) use the English language in a flexible and effective way for the various social, academic and professional fields, focusing in particular on the medical-scientific dimension. 4) write short medical texts (Case histories, Case Reports, Doctor's Findings).

The course allows the student to deepen historical, cultural and professional content related to the texts read in addition to the study of medical-specialist terminology and the development of medical-health skills: interacting with the patient, taking an anamnesis; this requires the reading of many pieces of Scientific English, listening to audio, watching medical-scientific videos in English.

At the end of the course students will be able to: 1) interact with a certain fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible 2) understand written texts of a certain length and conversations on scientific topics; 3) expressing an opinion on medical and scientific issues, indicating the advantages and disadvantages of the different options.


Course Structure

LESSONS ATTENDANCE:The attendance of 30 h. is compulsory on 42 hours of lessons;it is allowed the absence for roughly 30% of the hourly amount ( 12 hours)

Grammatical exercises: review of theoretical knowledge in English grammar ; learning specific scientific vocabulary.

Teaching methods: Frontal lessons, exercises: grammar and vocabulary practice, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking, watching some videos.

Final assessment: For the final interview, in English, students will start with Taking a History,will be asked to read a short Case History/Report/doctor's findings;then they will have to read an English text from those covered during the course, be able to translate it into Italian with correct medical-scientific terminology and answer in English ,fluently and adequately, comprehension questions about the text ; they will have to be able to describe orally with correct medical-scientific terminology some images of the human body
