Expected Learning Outcomes

This course aims at providing students with an appropriate knowledge of the principles and rules of public international law as well as of any implementing mechanisms within domestic legal systems, having particular regard to Italian law.

Course Structure

Academic teaching with a progressive interaction with students, also based upon the analysis of the most relevant international practice and case-law.

Required Prerequisites

It is advisable a prior knowledge of the fundamental concepts of Italian constitutional law.

Detailed Course Content

The module on International law relates to the different categories of subjects (states, international organisations and other subjects) and international legal sources (custom, treaty and the so-called third degree sources) and their mutual relationships as well as the contents of the main international customary rules and multilateral treaties’ rules. This module also includes the issues relating to the implementation of the international rules having regard to both the domestic legal systems (with particular regard to the Italian legal system) and the international legal system, taking into account the ascertainment of international rules (disputes and their settlement) and the international responsibility relationship.

Learning Assessment Procedures

Oral exam with evaluation based on the following criteria:

a. degree of pertinence and completeness of answers;

b. ability to correctly frame and solve legal problems;

c. ability to link with other topics in the Module program;

d. appropriate use of legal terminology.
