The course begins with basic knowledge of statistics, presenting methods for descriptive statistics of various kinds of data. The fundamental tests used in biomedical statistics will be presented. At the end of the course the student will be able to understand statistical results reported in biomedical literature, and to use simple techniques for statistical analysis and presentation of results.
The course aims at strengthening the students’ skills in conformity to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In particular, the course is set to develop the students’ vocabulary and the use of syntactic functions with respect to English for scientific and medical purposes and to provide students with a pragmatic tool for linguistic investigation and analysis of specific oral and written texts. Students will be able to: 1) interact with a degree of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible; 2) understand extended speech and lectures on scientific topics; 3) explain a viewpoint on medical and scientific issues, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Provide dentistry students the language skills to translate texts and scientific articles regarding their field of study. The reading of original texts in English language and also allows them to improve their knowledge of useful syntax and grammar for the production of written texts. Vocabulary is furthermore an important part of learning a language because it permits to surf the Internet for online consultation of the scientific literature, to stay up to date and to communicate.
