Learning Objectives

To provide critical understanding of fundamental issues of modern ethics, studied within the context of modern thought and explored with respect to the concepts of happiness and love, and the concepts of virtue and passion.



Detailed Course Content

The concepts of happiness and love between philosophy and literature. The conflict between amour-passion e amour de soi in the novel, La principessa di Clèves, by Madame de La Fayette. The journey from passion to virtue in the novel Storia del cavaliere Des Grieux e di Manon Lescaut by Antoine François Prévost. Love in epistolary form: from the Lettere di Abelardo e Eloisa to the philosophical novel Giulia o La nuova Eloisa, by J.-J. Rousseau. Love between bonheur and malheur. Love and friendship, amour-passion and amour conjugal in Rousseau’s novel. The concept of amour-passion in Stendhal.
