Learning Objectives

Advanced Course in Germanic Philology; in-depth analysis of the philological interpretation of Germanic texts; examination of Anglo-Saxon (7th-11th c.) written poetic documents.



Detailed Course Content

a) BASICS:

• phonological development from Germanic to the Anglo-Saxon dialects;

• essentials of Anglo-Saxon syntax and morphology;

• Ingvaeonic languages;

• the dialectal areas in Anglo-Saxon language;

• basic elements about history and culture of Britannia from the coming of Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons and Jutes) up to the Norman Conquest;

• the main Anglo-Saxon literary and poetic records;

 

b) ADVANCED:

“Words of Wisdom in Beowulf and elsewhere”:

• reading, philological commentary and critical interpretation of selected passages from Beowulf, The Old English Maxims and some lyric poems of the Exeter Book.



Textbook Information

A booklet with texts and critical studies will be provided.
