Learning Objectives

To provide critical understanding of fundamental issues of modern ethics, studied within the context of modern thought and with respect to the relationship between the subject and the world, freedom and wisdom, knowledge and action.



Detailed Course Content

J.-J. Rousseau: the subject in a game of mirrors; nature and civilization; being and appearing; authenticity and artifice. The role of conscience in Rousseau’s morals.

I. Kant: freedom and autonomy of the person; a man’s moral duties toward himself and others.

B. Croce: ethics and fragments of moral life.
