Learning Objectives

- To learn the origin and evolution of modern historical criticism;

- To learn the main types of sources and their use for historical analysis;

- To acquire the ability to identify, find, elaborate and work with historical sources.



Detailed Course Content

1. In the first part of the course attention will be given to methodological questions, related to historical research and the ways through which history is told. Different early modern history issues, from Humanism to the Twentieth Century, will be analyzed trough the lenses of modern historiographical ’acquisitions, of the main features of historical knowledge and of the critical approach to sources. Different types of sources (archival, literary, private/personal, figurative and audio-visual) will be illustrated and analyzed.

2. In addition, special attention will be given to the relationship between historical narrative and the use of sources (archival, literary and figurative).
