Detailed Course Content

The first part of the course is related to the period of the rise of Islam, its spread, the divisions between Sunni and Shi‘ah, Sufi and brotherhoods, the Qur’an and the šari‘a as a sources of Islamic law, the various schools of religious thought.

The second part focuses on the institutional aspects, the caliphates, the great empires and their geopolitical impact; the third and final part deals with the colonial event, its effects in Islamic countries and the peoples' struggle to independence.
