The course is based on lectures and interactive teaching. Attendance is not compulsory.
The course begins with Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt (1798) and the Ottoman reforms undertaken as a response to the crisis. European imperialism and emergent nationalisms will be studied along with the nation-States system created in the aftermath of WWI. Then the policies of independent regimes in the context of the Cold War will be examined in the light of the pan-Arab and Socialist cycle, the laissez-faire phase and the rise of Islamism.
