Learning Objectives

The teaching is divided into two parts that are closely related. The general course aims to the knowledge of the peculiar characteristics of the cultural, economics, philosophical, religious and social foundations from the Edict of Tolerance (313A. D.) to the action of Martin Luther (1483-1546) inside the variegated world of the medieval society (centuries IV-XVI). The monographic course is about the historiographic analysis realized by the medievalists of the 19th and the 20th centuries on the Sicilian Vespers Age (1250-1302). The study will show how a historical event in late medieval Sicily has been, at the same time, the theme of rigorous studies about documentary sources, a cultural model on which the civic identity of united Italy is based and a subject of political and cultural disputes from the ninenteenth century to the present.


Course Structure

The course will take place in the manner of lectures, in which the teacher will develop the program.



Detailed Course Content

Description of historic events that have characterized the Middle Ages. (centuries IV-XVII). The course pays particular attention to the most different aspects of the history of Sicilian Vespers (century XIII).
