Learning Objectives

The objective of this course is the mastery of the historical linguistics of the Spanish language aimed at the philological analysis of texts, as well as the identification and description of the different phases of language change and linguistic varieties of contemporary Spanish.


Course Structure

Lectures with the help of information technology and Power-Point presentations.

Seminar activities will be dedicated to the presentation of individual research followed by an open debate among all participants.

The course is entirely taught in Spanish.



Detailed Course Content

The course aims to provide fundamental notions of the origins and formation of the Spanish language and its evolution from the Middle Ages to the present day. We will examine the main processes of phonetic and morphosyntactic change through the reading and the philological analysis of texts, in order to exemplify the studied phenomena and highlight the main lines of development of the Spanish language system. A part of the course will also be dedicated to the analysis of the diatopic, diamesic, diaphasic and diastratic varieties of the Spanish language through the use of authentic materials provided by the teacher.
