Learning Objectives

To acquire a critical understanding of the historical development of philosophy, through the study of the History of Early Modern and Modern Philosophy up to the 20th Century, as well as through the knowledge and the reading of the works of the prominent philosophers.


Course Structure

Lectures, readings and commentaries of texts from major philosophers’ works.



Detailed Course Content

A – From Descartes to Rousseau (3 CFU): Descartes – Rationalism – Pascal – Spinoza – Leibniz – Locke – Berkeley – Hume – Vico – The Enlightenment – Rousseau

B – From Kant to Marx (3 CFU): Kant – Fichte – Schelling – Hegel – Feuerbach – Marx

C – From Schopenhauer to Gadamer (3 CFU): Schopenhauer – Kierkegaard – Nietzsche – Bergson – Pragmatism – Dewey – Croce – Gentile – Husserl – Heidegger – Jaspers – Sartre – Marxism and the Frankfurt School – Gadamer

N.B .: For the degree course in Letters (6 CFU) the examination program includes only modules A and B.
