The course aims to provide the key principles of medieval knowledge and introduce the understanding of the speculative world of the Christian Middle Ages. At the end of the course, the student acquires skills and useful methodological tools to deal with the extraordinary wealth of ideas of this age.
In addition to the frontal lessons, the course includes three seminars on case studies held by scholars and experts.
The course proposes a general study path of the principles, themes, and principal authors of medieval religious thought, with an exercise in reading William of Ockham’s Dialogue on the heretical pope (mod. A). Next, an in-depth study will concern the relationship between women and the Bible in the Middle Ages regarding reception and interpretation (mod. B). Some proposals for reading classics and historiographical essays complete this path (mod. C).
