The course aims to offer a deeper knowledge of medieval artistic contexts, specifically of languages, techniques, and stylistic problems in medieval Italian and European production.
A first study will be dedicated to some important narrative cycles between the 11th and 13th centuries, belonging to the Lombard Romanesque painting, to the Roman figurative tradition and to Norman Sicily, with the aim of maturing in the knowledge of narrative systems in medieval figurative culture, as well as the use of iconographic models and the indispensable link between clients, creators of narrative programs and artists.
A second focus will be dedicated to the plastic production made in Sicily from the moment of the Norman conquest of the island and throughout the age of the kingdom.
