TEORIE LINGUISTICHE PER LA LINGUISTICA COMPUTAZIONALE

L-LIN/01 - 6 CFU - 2° Semester

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to autonomously analyze a non-literary prose text by identifying and classifying its syntactic constituents. They will also be able to defend their own judgements, based on the main notions developed by 20th century theories. Students will eventually be able to compare and discuss two or more competing analyses by highlighting weaknesses and strength of each one.

Course Structure

Lectures, laboratorial activities.

Detailed Course Content

Different competing approaches will be compared in order to account for the following theoretical objects: word, compound word, word classes, collocation, multiword expression, phrase, discontinuous constituent; sentence, embedded clause, marked word order, text, cohesion strategies. The correlation between punctuation and syntactic relations will also be addressed.

Each theoretical topic will be the subject of exercises, which will also take into account some of the most common applications in constituency parsing (lemmatization, corpus tagging etc.).
