Learning Objectives

The main objective of the course is knowledge and understanding of the marine environment and ecosystem biodiversity with particular regard to plant biodiversity. In addition, the student will acquire knowledge about the structure, functioning and biodiversity of the main marine ecosystems and the risks to which this biodiversity is subject.


Course Structure

Lectures supported by power-point presentations (6 CFU=42 hours).

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.



Detailed Course Content

The marine environment; the seabed; characteristics of seawater. Marine biodiversity; Biodiversity and ecology of benthos. Biodiversity and ecology of plankton. Coastal ecosystems; coral reef ecosystems; seagrass meadows; mangroves; deep marine ecosystems; polar ecosystems. Past, present and future of marine biology. Human impact on the marine environment.
