GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

GEO/03 - 9 CFU - 2° Semester

Teaching Staff

CARMELO GIOVANNI MONACO
GIOVANNI BARRECA

Learning Objectives

Acquisition of the ability to carry out geological surveys on field with the recognition of stratigraphic units, tectonic structures and geomorphological elements and with the collection, processing and return of geological data that allow the creation of a scaled geological map, complete with contour elements (legend, stratigraphic columns, geological profiles, Schmidt diagrams) and supported by a geological summary report.

Course Structure

Frontal lessons (3 CFU, 21 hours), exercises on geological profiles, excursions on field (6 CFU, 72 hours).

If the teaching is given in a mixed or remote way, necessary changes may be introduced with respect to what was previously stated, in order to respect the program envisaged and reported in the syllabus.

As a guarantee of equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their specific needs and on teaching objectives of the discipline. It is also possible to ask the departmental contacts of CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or DSAs), in the persons of professor Giorgio De Guidi.

Detailed Course Content

Lectures: 3D geometric reconstruction of geological bodies from the geological limits on map. Application of the principles of stratimetry, stratigraphy and structural geology in the execution of geological surveys. Measurement techniques of the positions of planar and linear structural elements through the use of the compass and representation on map and on Schmidt diagrams.. Execution of geological profiles at distinct scales. Rules of conduct on field, equipment and tools.

Activities on field: excursions on filed in a study area of a few square kilometers, with the execution of geological surveys at a scale of 1:10,000, aimed at reconstructing the lithostratigraphic succession and the local structural setting. The collected data will be used for the creation of a geological map.
