Learning Objectives

knowledge and understanding: Provide interpretations of cultural and religious history and the evolution of political institutions in Islamic countries and in Arab ones in particular.

applying knowledge and understanding: Studying and analysing the history of Islam and the cultural aspects that characterize the Arab peoples, the student acquires knowledge of this civilization which facilitates his relationship with others and facilitates the work of those who undertake the activity of cultural mediation.

making judgement: The ability to analyse the texts both during research and the preparation of presentations and during the attendance of lessons are stimuli that strengthen the autonomy of the student's judgment which is consolidated by the new topics covered in this course.

communication skills: The course includes external seminars and internal presentations by students enhanced by the discussion of issues concerning the topics covered in the classroom; this reinforces the student's communication skills.

learning skills: During the course the necessary tools will be provided so that the knowledge acquired, both on the methodological and content level, can be used in the future to stimulate the student's curiosity, through topics of a culture so close but so different as the Arab-Islamic one. . This makes graduates able to exhibit and interact, with awareness, in new cultural themes.

Detailed Course Content

The course focuses on the cultural and religious history of the colonial and post-colonial period and on the evolution of Arab countries in the twentieth century. It also covers the current situation of these countries under the impetus for change which has originated from the revolutions of the Arab Spring.
