Learning Objectives

NEUROLOGIA
To provide students skills for the proper historical data collection and to address the neurological clinical examination

To provide students epidemiological and basic clinical knowldge for the diagnostic process of main neurological disease affecting

- central nervous system

- Peripheral nervoussystem

-muscles
NEURORADIOLOGY
The student must demonstrate to know the physical principles and the main clinical applications of the Diagnostic Imaging methods in the field of Neuroradiology.
Neurosurgery
To provide students with understanding of epidemiology, classification, clinical features, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the most common neurosurgical diseases, both cranio-cerebral and vertebro-medullary ones.

Course Structure

NEUROLOGIA
Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.
NEURORADIOLOGY
Frontal lessons as scheduled in the calendar.

Neurosurgery
Frontal teaching; practical training and seminars to be held at the Neurosurgical Unit, Policlinico San Marco University Hospital, Catania

Detailed Course Content

NEUROLOGIA
- Functional neuroanatomy of the Nervous System (Central, Peripheric and Neurovegetative)
- The diagnostic process in Neurology (chronopathology, localization and nature of neurological diseases)
- The neurological examination
- Knowledge of the main signs and symptoms in neurology
- Epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of the most frequent neurological diseases and syndromes (Headaches, Intracranial Hypertension, CNS infections, Epilepsies, Sleep disorders. Coma and other disorders of consciousness. Cerebrovascular diseases. Dementias. Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and other motor neuron diseases. Multiple Sclerosis and demyelinating diseases. Leukodystrophies. Ataxias. Myelopathies. Rizopathies. Peripheral neuropathies. Myastenia. Myopathies.)

• Cerebro-spinal Fluid circulation diseases: diagnosis and treatment (hydrocephalus)

• Cranio-cerebral hemorrhages, including subarachnoid hemorrhage

• Traumatic brain injuries

• Brain tumors: diagnosis and multimodal treatment, including sellar and parasellar tumors

• Vertebral and spinal cord tumors (extradural, intradural-extramedullary, intramedullary)

• Cranio-cerebral and vertebro-medullary malformations

• Traumatic spine injuries

• Cervical spondylotic myelopathy and cervical disc herniation

• Lumbar and thoracic spine disc herniation, spondylosis and spondylolisthesis
