The Course aims to convey to the student the knowledge and understanding of the etiological, pathophysiological and clinical bases of cardiovascular disease, along with technical aspects of laboratory, imaging and functional diagnostics.
Approach to the main arterial and venous steno-obstructive diseases. I and II level diagnostic methods for peripheral vascular diseases, thoracic and abdomen vascular pathologies. Open and endovascular surgical principles and techniques
Acquisition of the essential elements about cardiopulmonary bypass. Acquisition of basic knowledge about diagnosis and surgical treatment of most common congenital heart diseases, about acquired valvular diseases and ischemic heart disease. Acquisition of the essential elements about diagnosis and treatment of mechanical post-MI complications and about thoracic aortic diseases. Acquisition of basic knowledge about indications for heart transplantation and post operative complications
frontal teaching
Lessons
Topics concerning the main peripheral vascular diseases and large arterial and venous vessels:
1) Carotid and supra-aortic trunks pathology.
2) thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm.
3) thoracic and abdominal aortic dissection
4) Aorto-iliac obstructive pathology
5) Acute and chronic peripheral artery disease
6) Critical limb ischemia
7) Vascular access for hemodialysis
8) Steno-obstructive pathology of the large veins
9) Chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs
10) kidney transplant techniques
Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.
Principles of cardiopulmonary bypass.
Surgical treatment of simplex congenital heart diseases (Patent ductus arteriosus, Coarctation of aorta, Atrial septal defect, Ventricular septal defect) and complex congenital heart diseases( Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the great arteries).
Acquired valvular heart diseases (mitral, aortic and tricuspid valve): surgical indications; surgical conservative treatment and replacement; biological and mechanical prosthesis, stentless prosthesis.
Ischemic heart disease: diagnosis and surgical indications; surgical treatment on pump and off pump; conduits for revascularization; long term results.
Mechanical post-MI complications (mitral incompetence, ventricular septal defect, free left ventricular wall rupture, left ventricular aneurysm); surgical treatment.
Thoracic aortic aneurysm: classification, surgical indications and treatment.
Aortic dissection: classification, surgical indications and treatment.
Heart transplantation: donor selection (brain death); surgical indications; immunosuppressive therapy, post operative complications; short and long term results.
