Learning Objectives

To achieve and know how to use the right skills in the diagnosis and non-surgical and surgical management of the periodontal patient. To reach and obtain optimal skills in achieving and maintaining periodontal health.

The teaching is set up to guide and improve the student's approach to the patient suffering from periodontal disease. The different problems to face and learn to solve range from managing the patient according to their own risk profile to the ability to make a correct diagnosis, develop an appropriate treatment plan and plan the different therapeutic phases. In particular, it should be emphasized the importance of considering periodontitis, the sixth disease as prevalence worldwide, as a systemic disease, for which risk factors and relationships with other systemic diseases such as diabetes play a fundamental role. In addition, the student must be able to: perform a periodontal examination correctly, make a correct periodontal diagnosis, using the "New Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases", fill in a periodontal file, understand how to perform the causal therapy for the infection control and how to reassess and maintain the results obtained, to know how to evaluate the effectiveness of non-surgical therapy and to know the role and indications of periodontal surgery. They must also know how to use and interpret radiographic examinations useful in periodontology, know the outcomes and alterations at the level of hard and soft tissues caused by periodontal disease, have knowledge of the healing mechanisms after non-surgical therapy and after the different types of surgery, be able to establish a personalized supportive periodontal therapy program for the patient, at the end of the active therapy phase.

During the course, students are also invited to integrate the teaching part with participation in local, national and international scientific events organized by Scientific Societies of the periodontal field (Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology, European Federation of Periodontology) and to attend sessions dedicated to periodontology within academic events (National Congress of the College of Dentistry Teachers, local university initiatives).

The skills acquired will lead the student to develop a critical capacity on the topics dealt with using the skills actively for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in patient management in periodontology.

Course Structure

Lectures accompanied by slides and videos containing clinical images, scientific articles, decision-making paths, indications and contraindications to the various therapeutic options. Constant reference to the most significant literature to be integrated in the discussion of the topics covered in order to form students a critical capacity on the topics and allow them to acquire a knowledge suitable for the overall management of the patient suffering from periodontal disease. Final exam with oral exam, public, in order to ascertain the quality and level of knowledge and understanding of the course contents and the ability to apply the knowledge acquired to professional practice. The judgment will also assess the quality of the student's participation in the lessons.
