Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the qualitative determination of inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest present in commercial products, by means of their chemical behavior and instrumental techniques.

Course Structure

Module I, 2,5 ECTS

Module II, 2.5 ECTS

Module III, 1 ECTS - practical esercitations.

Detailed Course Content

The course aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the qualitative determination of inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest present in the commercial products, both by their chemical behaviour and by instrumental techniques. This knowledge will also be extended to some nutraceutical and natural substances. The course consists of lectures, laboratory exercitations, classroom exercises. The course program (total 6 CFU) is divided as follows:

MODULE 1 (2.5 ECTS): GENERAL INFORMATION ON LABORATORY OPERATIONS AND TECHNIQUES

General information on analytical methods. Classification, stages of an analysis, applications. Italian Official Pharmacopoeia Content (F.U.I).

Basic techniques and operations in semimicro analysis. Material and equipment in laboratories. Simple sample pretreatment procedures: dissolution, precipitation, filtration, centrifugation, decantation, extraction, pH measurement.

Safety and good practice in the laboratory. Safety and behaviour rules, hazard classes, symbols of harmful substances, safety data sheets, protective individual devices, waste disposal, accident prevention, first aid items.

Introduction to chromatographic methods. General information, classification, mechanisms, separation techniques and operating techniques. Application example: thin layer chromatography (TLC).

MODULE 2 (2,5 ECTS): INORGANIC SUBSTANCES OF PHARMACEUTICAL AND TOXICOLOGICAL INTEREST ENTERED IN F.U.I.

Chemical reactions. Type and classification;

Chemical-analytical and pharmaceutical properties of:

Carbonates, sulphites, acetates, borates, ammonium;

Silver, aluminium, iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, lithium, potassium;

Halogens, oxalates, phosphates, sulphates, nitrates.

Identification reactions described in F.U.I. for the aforementioned ions - Limit essays

Case study / SISTEMATIC ANALYSIS

LABORATORY EXERCISES (1 ECTS)

Safety in the laboratory. Simple sample pretreatment procedures: dissolution, precipitation, filtration, centrifugation, extraction, pH measurement, analysis of simple mixtures by chromatographic methods: TLC.

Analysis of cationic and anionic species:

carbonates, acetates, borates, ammonium ion.

cation analysis: Ag+, Al+++, Fe++, Fe+++, Ca++, Mg++

anion analysis: Cl-, Br-, I-, C2O42-, PO43-, SO42-, NO3-

analysis of cations and / or anions present in a mixture of pharmaceutical use.
