Learning Objectives

The course aims at introducing the student to the knowledge of Ancient Theatre from an archaeological, literary, artistic, architectural and performing-arts point of view, in particular in relation to the history of the circulation of theatrical performances in archaeological sites, starting from the twentieth century. The expected goal is to acquire literary and historical, technical and conceptual knowledge and skills, useful for the enhancement and promotion of the Greek and Roman archaeological sites and specifically the ancient buildings for performance, which dot the coasts of Sicily, Italy, and all around the Mediterranean basin.


Course Structure

The course is divided into:

– frontal lessons

– in-depth seminars on historical materials (documents, sets, costumes, sketches) at the archive of the Inda Foundation

– drama writing exercises on themes inspired by ancient myth (labΔrama)



Detailed Course Content

– Basic notions – literary, archaeological, architectural– on Ancient Theatre

– History of the performances produced by the Fondaz ione Inda (1914-2020)

– Reading of an ancient theatrical text: Bacchae by Euripides

– Writing of a contemporary dramaturgical text inspired by classic myth
