ARCHEOLOGIA DEL LIBRO

Students will become acquainted with the most important moments of the book history; they will know the process of books production and preservation from the Antiquity to the 19^th century; they will know catalogues, repositories, digital libraries, data bases about bookbinding and material evidence.

Traditional lectures; lectures in libraries.

Class attendance is strongly recommended.

The course presents the history of manuscripts from the Antiquity to the invention of printed books in 15th century. Particular attention will be given to the physical process, the techniques of manufacturing, the different forms of books (wooden tablets, scrolls, manuscripts, printed books).

Principal topics are:

• Manuscripts from Antiquity to 15th century: materials, techniques, circulation and preservation. Medieval handwritten in monastic and lay workshops.
• From manuscripts to printed books: the incunables.
• The printed books until 1830: materials, techniques, circulation and preservation. The printer workshop.
• Bookbinding from Antiquity to 19th century: materials, techniques, bookbinders.
• Readers and owners of manuscripts and printed books: material evidences and recording.
• Analysis and description of manuscripts and printed books.
