Learning Objectives

To provide adequate historical knowledge of the modern age, especially with regards to its breaks and discontinuities, also in light of the historical debate and of the diversity and multiplicity of the original sources. To become able to recognize the complexity of any historiographic construction.

Detailed Course Content

The two main goals of the class will be acquired thanks to a didactic path divided in two modules:

  1. The first, focused on early modern history and on its role in the construction of a notion of universal civilization, will follow a diachronic approach, starting from the end of the XV century up to the Seventies of XVIII century (7 CFU)
  2. The second will delve into some crucial moments in early modern history, analyzing the tensions provoked by natural disasters and their inevitable economic, political, social and cultural consequences (2 CFU)
