Learning Objectives

The course analyses authors and themes of the history of aesthetics from the ancient times till today, with particular reference to some key topics such as: the creation; the form; the symbolism; the artistic perception; the expressiveness; the imagination; the imitation; the fruition. The goal is to provide to students the knowledge related to the modern and contemporary historical-artistic debate, aiming to understand and deepen the key features of the discipline.

Detailed Course Content

A. General part (4 CFU)

The main historical stages of the aesthetics: from Antiquity to the Renaissance, from the Baroque to the eighteenth century, Idealism, Romanticism, Marxism, Neo-Idealism, Positivism, Evolutionism, Psychological Aesthetics, Linguistic, Semiotics, human Sciences, Vitalism, Pragmatism, analytical Aesthetics, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Hermeneutics, Deconstructionism.

The themes of aesthetics: beautiful, form, symbol, taste, genius, imagination, mimesis, ugly, sublime, tragic.

B. Monographic part (2 CFU)

Giovanni Matteucci: the aesthetic knowledge as anthropological procedure (Forma Formans; the perception between phenomenology and anthropology, Homo Effigiens).

Susan Langer: ten lectures on “the problems of the art” from which emerges one of the most influential aesthetic perspectives of the twentieth century.
