AGRICULTURAL GENETICS

AGR/07 - 6 CFU - 2° Semester

Teaching Staff

ANGELA ROBERTA LO PIERO

Learning Objectives

Providing foundations in the three main branches of genetics, genetics of character transmissions, molecular and population genetics, giving emphasis to experimental logic and problem resolution. At the end of the course, students will be able to understand the genetic mechanisms underlying the evolution of plants and apply experimental designs in order to identify and select genotypes for improved varieties.

Course Structure

Teaching (6 CFU) includes 28 hours of frontal lessons and 28 hours of classroom exercises. For lectures, the teacher will make use of power point presentations and videos, also in English. The exercises will consist of solving problems and exercises on the covered topics, also by applying appropriate statistical tests and availing of the SOCRATIVE platform. If the teaching is given in a mixed or remote mode, the necessary changes will be introduced, in order to respect the program reported here. Learning assessment might also be carried out remotely, should the conditions related to Covid-19 epidemiological emergency require it.

Detailed Course Content

Heredity and variability - Mendelian heredity - Association and mapping of genes - Structure and function of genetic material - Mutations - Population genetics - Qualitative and quantitative characters – Evolution and speciation - Genetic improvement of plants
