To supply to students a knowledge of bacterial infections of medical interest. Acquisition of methodological and technical competences and phenotypical and molecular techniques for the laboratory diagnosis of diseases and bacterial aetiology of medical interest.Acquisition of the specific lexicon, required for communicate in Italian and English languages.
Provide specific knowledge of human parasites, Protozoa and Metazoa, and their biological cycles; understanding of the adaptations that allow them the maintenance of the symbiosis and of the action they perform on their guests.
Develop the skills to apply this knowledge in the prevention and control strategies to the parasites studied.
Acquisition of the specific lexicon, required for correct communication, both written and oral, in Italian and English.
The teaching is divided into lectures and exercises; the latter provide both recurrent assessment activities and practical laboratories.
Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.
The bacteriological examination: the pre-analytical phase (physician's request, choice of examinations, patient preparation, collection and transport of sample); the analytical phase (bacterial culture, identification of microorganisms, susceptibility and report).
Classification of bacteria: The concept of species in bacteriology. Taxonomy phenotypic and genotypic.
Main bacteria of medical interest: morphology, identification, antigenic structure, pathogenesis, laboratory tests, therapy, epidemiology, prevention and control of: staphylococci, streptococci, enterococci, Corynebacterium, Listeria, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia, Acinetobacter and rare gram negative bacteria, mycobacteria, Vibrio, Campylobacter, Helicobacter, Haemophilus, Bordetella, Brucella, Yersinia, Neisseriae, Clostridia, Bacillus, Legionella, Mycoplasma, Rickettsiae, Chlamidiae and spirochetes.

Virological diagnostic.Viral infections of: Upper and lower respiratory tract ; Gastrointestinal tract ; Hematopoietic apparatus ; Central nervous system; Sexually transmitted diseases; Urogenital tract ; Eye; Skin and mucous membranes ; nosocomial infections ; TORCH ; Viral infections in immunocompromised patients; diagnostics and prevention of HPV infection.
Relationships between species: symbiosis, parasitism, coevolution.
