Learning Objectives


Acquired knowledge:

The student will acquire a general knowledge of the main preparations of herbal products, unit operations that allow the formulation of the preparations, the materials used and the rules of good manufacturing. Practical knowledge of some galenic preparations and extraction and purification techniques will also be acquired.

Skills acquired: Knowledge of herbal preparations; Knowledge of the main extraction techniques; Knowledge of the technological methodologies necessary for the preparation of herbal products


Course Structure

The course will be carried out through frontal lessons with the help of PowerPoint presentations and through group experiences in the laboratory on specific topics as reported in the program

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.



Detailed Course Content

The vegetable drug; initial treatments: 1a) Extractive preparation techniques; 1b) Mother tinctures and calculation of residual water; Spraying techniques; Capsules, powders and granules; Preparation techniques for distillation Concentration, drying and freeze-drying and nebulisation; Aqueous and hydroalcoholic solutions (definition of alcoholimetric title, density); Syrups, Elixirs, etc; Ointment preparation techniques; The quality of phytogalenic products; titration and standardization; Stability and stabilization of products; Products preservation; notes on packaging materials; Notes on Good Preparation Standards (NBP); Behavior in the Laboratory Laboratory experiences Preparation of a syrup Preparation of ointments Preparation of the capsules Extraction techniques using soxhelet Fractional distillation Separation and purification techniques
