Learning Objectives

Knowledge and understandig: Knowledge of the fundamental elements of Italian literature of XXth century; acquisition of philological research methodologies and literary criticism methodologies, with a special focus on the ability to analyse literary texts critically.

Applying knowledge and understanding: Ability to consider literary texts critically; ability to connect elements of one’s own culture with those of other cultures; ability to orient oneself within the printed and online bibliography; ability to link competences in an interdisciplinary way.

Making judgement: Critical ability to combine literary competences acquired in an interdisciplinary setting and to interpret different sociolinguistic and cultural domains from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective.

Communication skills: Ability to present the results of one’s study in complex ways; ability to discuss literary contents efficiently and critically.

Learning skills: Development of autonomous learning skills in studying the literary materials of the course with the aim of interacting with diverse interlocutors and in different working environments.


Course Structure

Lectures supplemented by seminars with other specially invited lecturers mid-term assessments.



Detailed Course Content

MODULE “LUIGI PIRANDELLO”

Pirandello’s Roman in European Culture. The monographic study will focus on Il fu Mattia Pascal.

 

MODULE “LETTERATURA ITALIANA DEL NOVECENTO”

Choice of classical authors.

For a critical approach, the student will draw from the following monograph:

Federigo Tozzi, Con gli occhi chiusi, several editions;

Vitaliano Brancati, Il bell’Antonio, Oscar Mondadori.

 

One book chosen between:

Beppe Fenoglio, La paga del sabato, Einaudi;

Leonardo Sciascia, L’antimonio, da Gli zii di Sicilia, Adelphi.

 

One book chosen between:

Italo Calvino, Il barone rampante, Oscar Mondadori;

Leonardo Sciascia, Candido ovvero un sogno fatto in Sicilia. Adelphi.

 

A choice of poems, by the teacher, by Gozzano, Saba, Ungaretti, Montale, Bertolucci, Caproni. The texts, with relative comments and analyzes, will be indicated and provided during the lessons (or during office hours).
