CHRISTIAN AND MEDIEVAL ICONOGRAPHY

The course aims to illustrate the genesis and development of the sacred image from the Early Christian period to the Middle Age. The relationship between each iconographic theme and the textual sources will be analyzed giving examples in different artistic media (monumental painting, mosaics, sculptures book illumination, luxury arts) and taking into account social and historical background.

Lectures.

Lectures will analyze the power and significance of the holy images in the Middle Ages and the specific iconological value of the iconographic themes expressed in the examined works of art. Particular attention will be paid to the representations of the Stories of the Old Testament from the 4th to the 12th century.
