Detailed Course Content

A - General part (4 CFU): The main historical stages of aesthetics: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries (Renaissance and Baroque), the Eighteenth century (Enlightenment), the Nineteenth century (Romanticism, Idealism, Marxism, Positivism, Evolutionism), the twentieth century (Italian Idealism, Pragmatism, Analytical Aesthetics, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Hermeneutics, Deconstructionism).

The themes of aesthetics: beauty, form, symbol, taste, genius, imagination, mimesis, ugly, sublime, tragic.

 

B - Monographic part (2 CFU):

- Ernst Cassirer: three seminars on art as a symbolic form (language and art and the educational value of art).

- Susanne Langer: ten lectures on 'The problems of art' from which one of the most influential esthetic perspectives of the twentieth century emerges.
