The vocational training of the fifth year of general surgery aims to achieve the skills necessary to present clinical cases, plan and discuss exams and therapeutic guidelines through attendance not only in the ward but also in the surgery and operating room.
In addition to collecting the medical history and the physical examination, the student will have to learn to identify the main clinical problems and to indicate, with a certain order of priority, the clinical, laboratory and instrumental examinations necessary to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. He will discuss clinical problems with the tutor and will be able to participate in the meetings and clinical seminars organized by the department.
At the end of the fifth year students must be able to:
• communicate information relating to known cases without uncertainty
• collect a medical history correctly
• carry out a complete objective examination of all the maneuvers necessary to arrive at a reliable diagnostic hypothesis
• program diagnostic tests and diagnostic imaging appropriate on a case-by-case basis according to a reasoned order of priority in order to obtain a correct diagnosis
• know the problems related to the execution of some investigations in particular in critically ill patients
• correctly interpret the results of laboratory tests and diagnostic investigations
• carry out technical maneuvers such as insertion of a nasogastric tube, vein cannulation, positioning of masks, dressings and removal of drains
