Learning Objectives

The course aims at understanding the explanatory factors of the demand for health care services, the characteristics of the health care service supply, the problems concerning the allocation of resources within the health sector and the elements for policy evaluation in this area. The student will acquire the ability to apply the tools of the economic analysis, in order to evaluate efficiency and equity issues in the allocation of resources in a given health system, and to identify the characteristics of the main intervention policies to address these problems.


Course Structure

The course includes lectures, carried out with the support of slides and supplementary teaching material that is made available to students through the Studium platform. There will also be moments of classroom discussion on case studies.



Detailed Course Content

Organization and financing of health systems; taxonomy of health systems; the Italian National Health Service and its comparison with other health systems; health needs and the demand for health care services; the Grossman model; the doctor-patient agency relationship; the provision of health care services; theoretical models of hospital behavior; efficiency in the provision of health care services; quality and appropriateness; principles and methods of economic evaluation of health care services.
