Learning Objectives

The course has the declared objective to provide the adequate knowledge and understanding of the following topics: analysis and characterization of minerals and rocks of economic interest survey methods for the retrieval and exploitation of minerals and rocks of economic interest criteria analysis for the evaluation and exploitation of mineral deposits and quarries for the extraction of natural materials analysis of the impact on the environment and on the health of the use of minerals The part related to the laboratory has the objective to provide adequate ability to apply knowledge relatively a: analytical techniques aimed at: defining the characteristics of minerals and useful rocks; their economic exploitation; determination of effects on the environment and on health


Course Structure

Lectures and laboratory exercises. For these, the student will perform single or group practical tests with the drafting of the final report



Detailed Course Content

Applied Mineralogy and Georesources: classification of minerals and rocks of economic interest; resources and reserves; use of georesources; economic value of earth resources; Classification of mineral deposits; deposits of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic origin; hydrothermal genesis; physical mineralogical and petrographic features of rocks and minerals of industrial interest

Examples of minerals and rocks with economic interest: clay minerals and their properties; kaolin; bentonites; zeolites; cements; examples of industrial processes for the preparation of the minerals and rocks; fossil fuels: composition and genesis of oil; the source and reservoir rocks.

Environmental and health aspects of the minerals: the asbestiform minerals; the particulate air pollution; volcanic ash

Laboratory of Applied Mineralogy: laboratory on the separation of minerals; XRD, XRF, porosimetry and microscopy laboratories.
