Detailed Course Content

The aim of the course is to provide students with the elements needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the politically relevant phenomena. The main theoretical and research perspectives on key issues of the disciplinary field are recalled: political cultures and identities, socio-political fractures, organizational forms (parties, pressure groups, and political movements), political participation and electoral behavior. A specific section focuses on the relationship between democracy, citizenship and political communication in the context of the post representative politics: the new forms of triangulation between media, political institutions and citizens, disintermediation and the new meanings of participation. The phenomena studied are attributable to the more general analysis of the mechanisms underlying the social, political and economic changes in contemporary societies. The perspective is an integrated knowledge thanks to different conceptual and methodological tools and with a focus on the historical evolution of the discipline and its theoretical-methodological specificity. The course allows the acquisition of knowledge related to politically relevant issues and the formation of a sensitivity, necessary to identify the political and social problems that characterize contemporary societies.
